Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these treatments need to be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you become starving," said a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on combined behavioural changes.
