The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical physical horror, but beneath Together resides a profound meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
